Glenn Falacienski
why i was laughing at the presidential election
And just like that, I am Gregor Samsa
waking up in the body of a bug.
I am fourteen again, all big eyes and spindly legs
and the ability to march in a line
with the weight of the world on my shelled back.
And just like that, I am Felix Hoenikker,
too smart to be useful and too useful to be smart
I operate under the rule of ruthless logic
with a dash of delusion, just enough to believe
that I would be a good president too.
And just like that, I am Viola
parading about pretending to be what I am not,
a costume so convincing I can’t take it off.
I wonder if it is safe to live as myself
if I will be the one that gets a happy ending.
