Crawling through a sea of shattered glass
on my hands and knees looking for intact crystals;
            finding intact crystals
            and putting another tally towards “survivors”;
using the complete tally to count the loss.           

            True professionals in the field of loss
            are familiar with the principles of negative tallies.
We group the survivors up in one corner
and the loss takes up the rest of the page
with a proud and overwhelming blankness.
